Terms of service

Matter Edit — Website Terms of Service

Last updated: 9 February 2026

1) About us

These Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) apply to purchases made through our website.

Trading name / partnership name: Matter Edit
Location: London, United Kingdom
Email: info@matteredit.com

2) Using our website

By using our website and/or placing an order, you agree to these Terms. You must be at least 18 years old to place an order.

3) Our products (pre-owned, vintage, antiques + design collaboration collections)

We operate across three areas:

  1. Pre-owned, vintage and antique pieces — bought and resold by us (including furniture and decorative objects).

  2. Curated design objects — sourced and offered through Matter Edit (which may include contemporary pieces).

  3. Design collaboration collections — limited, studio-led collections developed in collaboration with makers/designers and offered through Matter Edit (often made-to-order and not held as stock).

Handcrafted nature and variation (collaboration collections):
Many collaboration pieces are handmade using traditional processes and natural materials. As a result, variation is expected and intentional. Subtle differences in glaze, pigment, tone, texture, surface, edges, and exact dimensions may occur from piece to piece. These characteristics are considered part of the work’s individual character and are not treated as faults where consistent with the product description and imagery.

Condition (pre-owned / vintage / antique):
Pre-owned, vintage and antique items will show signs of age and use (including wear, patina, marks, and historic repairs). We describe items as accurately as possible, including key condition notes and measurements.

Photos are representative; colour and texture may vary by screen and lighting. Measurements are provided in good faith; small tolerances may occur.

Nothing in these Terms limits your statutory rights.

4) Authenticity, attribution and dating (antiques)

Any references to maker, origin, date, period, materials, or attribution are offered in good faith and reflect our opinion based on research and available information. Where provenance is uncertain, we will describe items accordingly.

5) Prices

All prices are shown in GBP unless stated otherwise.

Delivery costs are shown at checkout or quoted separately (particularly for large items and international orders). If we discover an obvious pricing error, we may cancel the order and refund you.

6) Payment (100% upfront)

We require full payment at checkout for all orders (including made-to-order pieces). Payment methods are shown at checkout.

7) Availability and basket reservations (one-off items)

Many items are one-off. Adding an item to your basket does not reserve it. All orders are subject to availability and confirmation. If an item becomes unavailable for any reason, we will notify you and issue a full refund.

8) Orders and contract formation

After you place an order, you will receive an order confirmation email. A contract is formed when we accept your order (normally when we confirm dispatch, or when we confirm a delivery/collection date for large items).

We may refuse or cancel an order (for example, due to availability errors, pricing errors, address issues, or suspected fraud). If we cancel, we will refund you.

9) Delivery and shipping

9.1 Standard delivery (small/standard items)

Small and standard-sized items are shipped using a tracked and signed courier service.

9.2 Large items (including sofas)

Large items (including sofas, armchairs, large tables, and similarly bulky/fragile pieces) are delivered using a specialist two-person furniture courier, quoted individually based on the item and destination.

  • Service level: two-person room-of-choice placement (carried into the home and placed in the room you specify, where safe and reasonably accessible).

  • Scheduling: delivery is scheduled in advance. Someone must be present to receive the item.

  • Not included unless agreed in writing: assembly, wall mounting, door removal, removal of existing furniture, installation, unpacking/packaging removal, or disposal.

9.3 International shipping

International shipping is quoted individually per item and destination. Import duties, taxes, and local fees are the responsibility of the recipient unless agreed otherwise in writing.

If export/import of a particular item is restricted or unlawful (for example due to regulated materials), we may be unable to ship and will cancel/refund the order.

9.4 Access requirements (important)

You are responsible for ensuring safe, reasonable access for delivery, including door widths, stairwells, tight turns, lift size/availability, parking/loading restrictions and building rules.

If delivery fails due to access issues not disclosed in advance, an incorrect address, or nobody being available, you may be charged for redelivery, additional handling, storage, or return transport.

9.5 Non-delivery / missing deliveries

If your order has not arrived within a reasonable time of the estimated delivery date, please contact us as soon as possible so we can investigate with the carrier.

9.6 Risk and title

Risk passes to you on delivery (or collection). Title transfers once we have received payment in full.

10) Delivery inspection and transit damage

Please inspect items on delivery (and before disposal of any packaging where relevant). If you believe an item has been damaged in transit, notify us within 72 hours of delivery with photographs and your order number.

Please retain all packaging and shipping documents until you are satisfied with the item. Where a signature is required, please inspect first where possible and note any visible damage with the carrier.

For clarity: natural variation inherent to handmade pieces (for example subtle differences in glaze, pigment, tone, texture, or finish) is not considered transit damage or a fault where it is consistent with the product description and imagery.

This section helps us resolve claims quickly with couriers/insurers and does not affect your statutory rights.

11) Your right to cancel (online consumer orders)

If you are a consumer (buying as an individual), you generally have the legal right to cancel an online order within 14 days of receiving the goods, without giving a reason.

To cancel, email info@matteredit.com with your name, order number, and the items you wish to cancel.

12) Returns (change of mind) — arranged collection only

Returns are by arrangement only. Please do not send returns to the correspondence address listed below.

Once you notify us of cancellation/return:

  • For small/standard items, we will either (a) arrange courier collection, or (b) provide return instructions (including a return address) for tracked return shipping.

  • For large items, we will arrange collection via a courier or two-person furniture service, as appropriate.

Return costs: Unless the item is faulty or misdescribed, you are responsible for the cost of return collection/shipping. Where we arrange collection, we may deduct the collection cost from your refund (or invoice it separately).

Care and condition: You may inspect items as you would in a shop, but if handling beyond what’s necessary reduces value, we may make a deduction from the refund.

13) Refunds

Where you cancel under the consumer cancellation right, we will refund you in line with consumer rules:

  • normally within 14 days of receiving the goods back, or within 14 days of receiving evidence they have been sent back (whichever is sooner); and

  • if we have offered to collect the goods, within the required timeframe from cancellation notice.

Refunds are made to the original payment method. If you paid for delivery, we refund the cost of standard outbound delivery (where applicable). If you chose a more expensive delivery option, we only refund the standard option.

14) Made-to-order and bespoke items

14.1 Made-to-order collaboration pieces (not held in stock)

Some pieces are produced on a made-to-order basis and are not held as stock. Lead times (where possible) are stated on the product page or confirmed by email.

Order changes: For made-to-order items, we may be unable to accept changes once production has started. This does not affect your statutory rights.

14.2 Bespoke/personalised items (cancellation exception)

Where an item is made to your specifications or clearly personalised (for example: custom dimensions, a bespoke finish agreed specifically for you, tailored upholstery choices requested by you), the consumer right to cancel for change of mind may not apply. We will make this clear on the product page and/or in writing before production begins.

15) Faulty, damaged, or misdescribed items

If an item arrives faulty, damaged, or not as described, contact us with photos and your order number. Your statutory rights apply.

16) Trade / business customers

If you buy on behalf of a business, certain consumer protections (including some cancellation rights) may not apply.

17) Intellectual property

All website content (text, images, branding and design) is owned by us or licensed to us. You may not copy, reproduce, or use it without our written permission.

18) Limitation of liability

Nothing in these Terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or anything else that cannot be limited by law.

Subject to that, we are not liable for losses that are not foreseeable, or for business losses (loss of profits, revenue, goodwill) arising from consumer purchases.

19) Events outside our control

We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control (including courier disruptions, strikes, severe weather, or supply interruptions).

20) Complaints and dispute resolution (ADR)

If you have a complaint, please contact us at info@matteredit.com with your order number and a description of the issue (including photos where relevant). We aim to respond as quickly as reasonably possible and to resolve complaints fairly and promptly.

If we are unable to resolve a complaint through our internal process, we will provide you (by email or other durable medium) with information about an appropriate ADR provider and whether we are obliged or prepared to submit to ADR. Nothing in this section affects your legal rights, including your right to bring a claim in court.

21) Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The Terms in force at the time you place your order will apply to that order.

22) Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and disputes will be handled by the courts of England and Wales, except where mandatory consumer law in your country of residence applies.
